Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

IASTM, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization, is performed using specific tools to break up immature collagen tissue and enhance tissue healing.  It is based on Gua Sha, which was part of Chinese traditional folk medicine. Its purpose is three-fold.  On a mechanical level, it serves to stimulate fibroblasts to lay down new collagen.  It can also break up scar-tissue or facial restrictions to improve mobility and tissue extensibility.  On a neurological level, IASTM can facilitate certain muscles to become more active during a specific movement. IASTM is appropriate for many patients at varying points in their rehab.  Many of our therapists are certified in this technique and have found countless benefits from utilizing IASTM as part of a comprehensive rehab program.
